This is for you Viet people out there.

My dad is Japanese and my mom is Vietnamese. Today we went to a Vietnamese restaurant and as we were packing up the leftovers, my dad went so far as to label the containers. The container of rice (com in vietnamese) read “Gum”. Another container containing soup (Canh Chua) read “Gun Jew”. The container of meat (thit kho) read “Tikkaw”. I couldn’t stop laughing even after we got home!

This is the birthday card that I got from my father and his wife this year.

A few things:
1) Dad picked out the card. The handwriting is his.
2) I love cats, but I’ve never owned one.
3) I turned 46 this year.

I just moved to a new city for school. This is part of a recent email from Dad:

Second week already and how is your life now. Still lonely and boring? Hope you will get over it now. I think you will be OK. Put your mind into the book and let it wandering back here. By the way. don’t worry about me. Just concentrate on your study and pratice your French. Maybe two years later, your French is much better than your English. Haha!

I don’t talk to my dad often while I’m in school, but I was panicking about my immense amount of work and, seeking reassurance, had the following text conversation with him:

me: So I should just be able to work all night and get it done, right?

(a minute later)
me: Well?
Dad: I hope so!

(7 minutes later)
Dad: A hole in the ground with water in it.
me: What??
Dad: A well.

So I emailed my dad an update about dorm life and all the people I’ve met and this was his response…

For those annoying people, try to stay away. Do not show your dislike them, especially in public. You need to hang on old friends. Do not dump them when you have new friends. Decide not to go to Tucker’s audition? You are dumping your Cello.

We miss you very much
Love

HI, Gina,
How is the mattress? If it is still hurts, you need to see a Doctor. You need to get used to the new job. If the work load is too much, you can talk to your manager. Does everyone work that long hours? It should be getting better as it goes. The current heavy load may be
cumulated as people are expecting your arriver. The two years working experience is very important to your career. I will talk to you this weekend. Julie got a new god last night, 6 weeks old. it pees everywhere.

Advice on Boys

I was not sure what caused you to feel so sad yesterday. If you willing to share it with me, I am listening. If it was because some boy making some unintended comment on you, be strong but also be wise from now. If you were too boyish or too uninhibited in from of male, they may see you as one of them and start behave less respectfully. You want to be a little bit more mysterious and sometimes at an arm length from them. You need to let them feel that you need to be cared for sometimes and they can not see you through at once. Use ar-nian (your maternal grand mom) as example, she always put her best foot forward (well dressed and make ups) when she is with stranger. She is also less chatty when we go out so everyone new thinks of her as a gracious lady. So learn a little from her in that respect. Hope that helps.
