My family runs a small business, we wholesale auto parts. A good majority of our customers are Spanish speaking and/or from Spanish speaking countries…

Dad: That new customer show up?
Me: Who?
Dad: Hymen.
Brother: WHAT?
Me: Who? Do you mean–
Dad: Hymen Hy-men. You know, Hymen.
Sister: Hy–JAIME? DAD, IN SPANISH IT’S NOT HYMEN, IT’S JAIME. LIKE HAI-ME.
Dad: That’s what I said, Hymen. What’s wrong?
Me: Hymen is not the same it’s–
Brother: How do you even begin to explain that one?

Actually, this didn't sound so weird to me until I realized that the customer was Spanish. “Hyman” is the Anglicised version of the Hebrew “Chaim”, and not too unusual a name among older American Jews.

True. I had an uncle whose name was pronounced Hyman. Funny, but definitely a real name.

I teach at a 99% Hispanic school. Last week a new kid named Jaime entered my class. I made the exact same mistake and called him “Hymen” for a full twenty minutes before I realized my stupidity…culture fail? The worst part is that I'm half Mexican myself. Ouch.

At least her name is spelt Jaime…

In the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2009, there was actually a girl named Hyman, pronounced Hyman: http://www.torontochinesepageant.com/2009/girls...
