I had an interesting conversation with my dad earlier today.

We had a bbq and brought out the food umbrellas out to keep the critters
out.

dad: “How very Oriental of us to use these things.”
me: “Why do you say that?”
dad: “Remember when we used to use them in Japan?”
me: “Yea, but the term Oriental is derogatory. People from Europe back in
the day used that as a way to objectify and commodify Asians. Like,
describing an object or a flavor of top ramen or something. It’s also
negative in a sense where the wonderful missionaries felt the need to save
the backwards heathens of the east. The correct term to use these days is
‘Asian’ dad, and we ain’t rugs.”
*dad pauses for a moment*
dad: “Ok. Those umbrella’s are Oriental.”

i don't think there's anything wrong with saying 'oriental'….i've never heard of it used in a deragatory sense.

  • suzie

I think the point was that the term has a racist history….I guess it's kind of like saying “gypped”. You might not mean it in a racist way, but in the past it was a derogatory term for gypsies. You know, something like that.

Eh, I don't think Oriental is bad… It maybe have been derogitory in the past, but I don't know anyone who takes offense to it.

The word “oriental” has been taught to most Americans that it is not really politically correct. I guess it is a somewhat more recent phenomenon. When in doubt, DON'T USE IT, especially in America. Honestly, you would look racist saying that if you were not of asian ethnicity and if you are an asian-american or asian-wherever and still decide to use it then you look uncultured.

However, in countries like UK it's more accepted although that is starting to change.

I have a big issue with people who say “oriental” instead of “Asian”. To me, that is just as bad as saying “Indian” when the proper term is “Native American”

  • Erica

Oriental definitely is not politically correct and does have a very racist past. Do not use your young age or new generation to excuse what “used” to be racist. It's like going up to black people and calling them colored people or a negro. The term “Oriental” used to describe Asian people certainly isn't commonplace now, but I would never tolerate someone calling me an Oriental girl. Sometimes racist words go out of style and aren't used anymore, but that doesn't mean there should be a revival and people should start using them again just because it's been a while.

    Re: Jason

It's very true that in the UK Asian people are called “Oriental.” I was very surprised when someone announced the creation of their Oriental forum at another forum I visit dedicated to Hamasaki Ayumi. I was so confused, but I looked it up and apparently in England, Asian people are southeast asians- Indians, and Orientals are East Asians. There apparently is no negative connotation associated with the term Oriental over there, but this is just what I read.

  • youstupidfobs

In Canada we don't use nice terms. Chinks, Crackers, Ginos, Apes, Natives (you don't need a slang for them).

  • denise

actually your dad used it correctly. “Oriental” can still be referred to objects of Asian origin, like as you said, rugs. it only becomes non-PC when referring to people. but general rule of thumb is just don't use it.

  • jackie

DONT BE STUPID!!!! IF YOU'RE FROM THE ORIENT YOU'RE ORIENTAL

    dumbass

  • Nina

Part of the issue of the term “oriental” being offensive is that by definition it means “from the east”, as opposed to “occidental” which means “from the west”. Calling Asians “oriental” is a legacy of a Euro-centric world view because to Europeans, Asians were from the east.

  • wongwong

I personally would have a problem being called an oriental if it ever happened, but more importantly this entry is dumb.

  • http://www.santaferanch.com Rustic Furniture

why? what's wrong with saying oriental?

  • nm

and the slang for you is “fucking retarded.”

  • Sandy

“Native American” is a phrase coined in the liberal years of the 1960's to replace “Indian” with a supposedly more appropriate term. Regardless of the intent, the term is no more appropriate than its predecessor. “America” is derived from Amerigo Vespucci, a 16th century Italian navigator who was once said to be the “discoverer” of the continent. How can the people who were already here be named with his name?

  • TheBladeRoden

And nowadays people are using the term American Indians on top of it all
