Dad: How was your rabies shot? (referring to the HPV shot)
Me: What?
Dad: You had your rabies shot today at the doctor’s?
Me: No Dad, it’s to prevent cervical cancer. I’m not an animal. What are you even talking about?
Dad: So it was okay?
Dad (to my sister): Your sister is very sensitive about her rabies shot.

OMG my father would say this… and he would know it's an HPV shot, not a rabies one, and deliberately say rabies anyway ><

It's not a shot against cervical cancer. HPV stands for human papillomavirus, also known as genital warts (http://www.cdc.gov/STD/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm).

The reason why they say it's a vaccination against cervical cancer is because genital warts is the number 1 cause of cervical cancer. However, the shot doesn't inoculate you against cancer. They like to say that it does to better manipulate parents into giving that shot to their 12-year-old daughters.

Because what kind of parent would you be if you didn't vaccinate your kid against cancer?!?

Certain strains of HPV may cause cervical cancer and certain strains can cause genital warts. Genital warts do not cause cancer.

And what's wrong with vaccinating your kid against something that can harm them again?

Because some people are antivaccination nutters who have bought into the media hype surrounding ONE study which has been repeatedly discredited which suggested that vaccines *may be* linked to autism, so they're willing to expose their children to all kinds of potentially lethal diseases which have a WAY higher risk of killing or maiming them compared to the miniscule risk of vaccine side effects (which do not include autism).
